Introduction

From my earliest memories I've been attracted to drawing and as a child my mother would keep me quiet by giving me a pencil and paper. I've always assumed this disposition has informed my life's work.

My first employment was with an outdoor advertising firm where I began to develop a life long appreciation and interest in letters and lettering.
My professional introduction to the art world was by way of commercial art as a show card writer for a San Diego department store. This employment subsequently led to a 43 year career as a calligrapher/graphic designer working mostly as a free-lancer with various advertising agencies and art services both in San Diego and in Cincinnati, Ohio.

After retiring from the commercial art world and moving to Crescent City it wasn't long before I renewed my old love of drawing and painting. As a youth I was an avid painter and even after a 40 year hiatus I resumed the affair as if I had never left and with the benefit of 40 years of mature insight. This decision has proven a good one allowing me a liberating freedom of expression as well as my work being welcomed by a larger audience than my calligraphy allowed.

As an artist I hope that if I can involve the viewer of my painting in sharing the feeling I had when first I saw a subject, then I feel I've succeeded in my work.
