Born 1931 in North Dakota, John traveled extensively with his family and eventually settled in California. He earned his BFA in Advertising Art in 1959 and an MFA in Printmaking in 1961 at California College of the Arts in Oakland, California. With the exception of teaching print-making at California State University, Hayward, most of his career was spent working as a art director. Earlier in his career, he worked in the more traditional print making techniques. He now works only in the digital medium.
His prints were selected to be included in “Recent American Prints,” a group exhibit of contemporary American prints that toured Asia. It was sponsored by the Library of Congress and the United States Information Agency.
His prints have won awards at the California State Fair in Sacramento, the Palace of The Legion of Honor in San Francisco, Art in Public Places (DNACA) and “Celebrating The Creative Arts of Older Americans” in Crescent City, California, the Del Norte County Fair in Crescent City, California, and the Azalea Art Festival that is held in Brookings, Oregon.
His work has been exhibited in group showings at Library of Congress, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the deYoung Museum in San Francisco, California, the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts at the Palace of The Legion of Honor in San Francisco, the San Francisco Museum of Art, The San Francisco Public Library, the Oakland Art Museum, and in many other group exhibits. It is represented in permanent collections at the Library of Congress, the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts in San Francisco and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
